I wanted something bullet proof with the small USB transceiver and I'm really impressed so far.This mouse (HP Product No.: VK482AA, Mod.No.: FHA-3511) uses TWO AA batteries which gives it a great range of over 30 feet, meaning you'll never be moving the mouse to the other side of your laptop to get it to work (like my old one.) This is a laser mouse and it must be utraviolet because you don't see any light from the sensor on the bottom. There is a light in the scroll wheel which comes on to show it's working when you move the mouse or press a button (if you set the software setting to "High.") I'm sure HP did this because you can't see the glaring red sensor. The software lets you turn this feature off, which should extend your battery life. I leave the receiver in my computer all of the time and I travel with my laptop often. I have no issues with the on/off switch on the bottom.
